Engineering the Impossible: the Palm Jumeirah Story
Palm Jumeirah remains one of the most audacious real estate projects ever completed. Construction began in June 2001, with 120 million cubic metres of sand dredged from the seabed and 7 million tonnes of rock used to form the island’s crescent breakwater. The first residents arrived in 2007, and the Palm today is home to some of the world’s most prestigious hotels, including Atlantis The Palm, alongside thousands of luxury villas and apartments.
Valued at more than $12 billion, Palm Jumeirah has become synonymous with Dubai’s global identity. Property values on the island have increased by approximately 40% since launch, and it continues to attract the world’s most discerning buyers and investors.
A legacy portfolio across Dubai's waterfront
Beyond Palm Jumeirah, Nakheel has created a portfolio of communities and destinations that have fundamentally shaped Dubai’s urban geography. Jumeirah Lake Towers, Jumeirah Islands, Jumeirah Park, and Al Furjan are established residential communities housing tens of thousands of residents. Ibn Battuta Mall and Nakheel Mall provide retail anchors within Nakheel’s communities.
The company is now delivering its next generation of flagship projects: Palm Jebel Ali, which stands twice the size of Palm Jumeirah and will eventually accommodate 35,000 residents across 80 hotels and hundreds of luxury villas; and Dubai Islands, a five-island coastal development covering 17 square kilometres that is rapidly becoming one of the region’s most anticipated new destinations.
